I did not post on this forum for many years because I moved to the UK and was busy with other things. Anyway, last week we spent some time with my daughter at Thames river and she found a wonderful roman gemstone.

As there is a concern that this could be a replica will wait with sharing this until I hear from a specialist.

Nice find, possibly from a finger ring. thanks for showing.. Hutch.

I assume you have a permit like I do to hunt the Shoreline?

It does look like a Carnelian gemstone, carved in the Roman style. They were heavily copied in the late 18th & 19th C, so that would need to be excluded by a hands on expert.
However, as we have had a couple, it looks good to me. No idea on the God/Goddess.

Forgot, this would have been in either a bronze or silver ring. If it were in gold the incised décor would be better crafted. Its more likely to be 1st-2nd C AD.

Thank you for your comments. To be honest I was also concerned that this might be a replica as it was eyeballed by a child on the sand and it was in a good condition for something lost 1900-1800 years ago and being in water mixed with sand all this time. My guess, though, was that they would try to copy something nicer and sexier than just a goddess of the annual grain supply whom almost no-one is aware about (if my ID is right). So I'm kind of lost...

Should I go to a museum and ask?

If you have the permit to pick it up legally.

Yes. Will try a specialist first and then update the post.
