looks like a wine jug, but I have no idea of origin or age

Its a type of Amphora. definitely deserves more research. There are modern repros which look very similar. This one looks much older. Your location says New York/ Florida. Either were early trade centers from the very beginning. Maybe research Spanish Amphora first?
