I went to an older part of town after work and hit the curb strips. I found a buck or so in clad without even a wheat penny. I figured that the sidewalks had been replaced fairly recently. In my junk pouch I had put a nondescript disc of metal that I thought might be some kind of button. When I got home I hit it with the soft toothbrush and my "button" said United States of America on it. It turned out to be an 1850 large cent with a big hole in the center. This is my first coin from the 1800's.

Wow! That must have been either one rich or desperate person to use that much of an 1850's income for a washer! :)

Always be careful about that "junk" pouch. It captures some of the most interesting finds!!

HH!

NOW! Thats a neat find!...............HH

Way to go Reed. That's awesome. Just makes you want to go back and keep digging. If you want to clean up that largie you can soak it in hot peroxide (put a small amount in a shallow bowl and microwave for 30 secs.) for a couple of minutes then scrub it with a soft tooth brush. Do this a couple of time then dry it off and rub olive oil on it. You'll be amazed at how good it will turn out. If you decide to clean it post the after pics.

It always pays to double-check the junk pouch. Great save!
