Unidentified object...possible buckle? Partial belt plate? Ideas?

I found this item at an old home site that dates back to about 1875. Not very far from where Revolutionary campsites were located. Part of a buckle is just a wild guess. It's shaped like a buckle would be but the screws in it are throwing me off. It looks like its missing a piece. Any ideas? I threw a quarter in there for size comparison.

I would guess it is made of brass. I don't have a magnet to check it. I believe you are right that it was fastened to something but I have no idea what. If you look closely at the first picture it also looks like it is missing a piece (a small circular piece) in the middle of the object where the two small indentations are.
