McDonalds ran a program back in the 80's where they gave away South American coins to celebrate their "Fiesta Burger" and ther salad line.

I was wondering myself why I'd find coins from Venezuala or what-have-you in some little park or playground. Then I recalled this giveaway.

Zillions of coins entered the pockets of kids this way.

Charlie... very cool! I don't remember that at all... but it sure would explain it! Do you think there are MD'rs in Puru wondering about that 1980 dime?

Opened Charlies coin.

That particular giveaway program from McDonald's started in 1988.

dcrooksjr's coin is dated 1981.

Like Montana Jim I was not aware of that promotional item. Thanks! Charlie.

Still no pic better description below, coin most likely worthless but that doesn't concern me, I just gotta know where it came from.

Date:1981
Size: About a penny
On the face: Man in a suit and bow-tie facing straight ahead
On the left face: 10 Centavos
On the right face: 2 1/2 Gramos
Reverse: Appears to be a bell, their are plants on both sides of the bell looking object, one appears to be an olive branch, the other looks like a fern, just a guess.
One ribbon above the bell, and one below the bell separated into three sections, words unreadable.

Like I said above, Dominican Republic.

Example of your coin in the 25 cent variety pictured... is this it?

Charlie's theory seems correct about the give away. The coin is 1981, the give a way started in 1988, coins tend to have a long life. We can still find coins from the 60's and the 70's in our common pocket change, so the chances of McDonalds obtaining a coin that was only eight years old at the time seems highly possible.
