Update on Storm's find..... (updated pictures) to see nic-a-date

I borrowed some nic-a-date from my friend and used them on the 2 no date buffalos I have. One was a MD recovery and the other was RFC (Recovered From Circulation).

MD Find = 1916-D $8 coin in Good-4
RFC = 1915-D $10 coin in Good-4

Not to mention, my oldest coin found to date using the MD! ;D

Updated pictures...You can see the date, it's very faint. However, you can see a date now.

Re: Update on Storm's find.....

So that stuff just enabled you to read the date?

Never heard of it... very cool!

Re: Update on Storm's find.....

I tried it on 3 buffalos and it worked on one. I guess the other 2 were just too worn out. Don't let that stuff touch anything you don't want etched. Especially your wifes stainless steel sink that you had no clue that it would leave a round mark exactly the same size as the buffalo nickel you were trying to bring the date out on........OOPS!!!

Re: Update on Storm's find.....

:-X Sounds like you got in a bit of trouble, Dang!

I have heard of it, but really didn't think it could ever work. :P Glad to find out that it does! Congrats on those great coins!

Nana :)

Re: Update on Storm's find.....

It works, some coins take multi-coats to bring the date out on them.

Re: Update on Storm's find.....

Cool coins Trooper, I have never heard of Nic A Date, sounds like it works, on coins and stainless sinks too LOL

sorry, I didn't spell the name right...Thats why no luck....It's actually called Nic-a-date

Here is a link to an ebay auction for some. The seller also has a auction for the nic-a-date and 20 no-date buffalos for like $8...Might be fun ;D

Hey Storm,
You are funny! ;D

I bought the auction with the nickles - but now they want me to send in the payment - wtf!?!?

I email them and asked there paypal address - who the heck uses money orders anymore for auctions?

Oooooh, well - we will see what they say.

Thanks for the info and I will let you know how the buffalo's turn out.

Congrats Storm, I haven't MD'd one that old yet.
That nic-a-date sound like something to make your date stop smoking! ;D

Re: Update on Storm's find..... (updated pictures) to see nic-a-date

Updated pictures to see what the nic-a-date did. Very faint dates, but there are dates.

Re: Update on Storm's find..... (updated pictures) to see nic-a-date

Hey all...

"Nic-a-date", or whatever its called is just ferric chloride. You can get a big bottle of it at Radio Shack for a lot less than this commercial product. Its used to etch copper off circuit boards.

Apply just a drop ( use a toothpick or plastic swizel stick) and let it set for a minute or so. The liquid will turn black. Rinse under the sink and as someone else said, it etches many different kinds of metal (I use it to etch damascus knife blades which are steel) so don't get it on any appliances.

Its not a true "acid", as I understand it, but you might want to put on a pair of vinyl gloves, as it really stains hands (and fabrics). Anyway, it won't make the no date buffalos more valuable...collectors turn their nose up at such nickels) but at least you know what date you have.

Re: Update on Storm's find..... (updated pictures) to see nic-a-date

I have seen a lot of slabbed and graded no-date buffalos. I would rather use the nic-a-date and find a double die 1916/16 that is worth $1000.00 in good-4, then to never know what I have.

Wow! Thanks for the pics, Trooper!
