The Rosicrucian Manifest was published in 1614, so that might be a place to start. I think snakes and cups were symbols associated with them, but I'm not sure. I also believe that serveral later organizations adopted Rosicrucian symbols and mythology and incorporated them into their groups.

I think this would be right direction to follow also..
