You may want to consider carefully straightening out, it might be a buckle or something important.

Interesting sterling piece. Could be a part of a mechanical pencil or pen. Can you post some more views of the taco’s brass piece? If you try to straighten it out the patina / crust will crack off, but you might be able to flatten without breaking. Congrats

Having seen your additional pics, I'm now thinking more along the lines of saddle decoration.
It looks pretty thick and it's gold gilt, so it maybe the back portion of a pocket watch?

If mine, I'd tumble it and see what details come through.
