"US" item found today (ID?)

"US" item found today (ID?)

Found this cool item marked US in an old part of town in South Georgia. No battles were there, but I suppose it could still be Civil War era. Any feedback appreciated. It's about the size of a half dollar and about as thick as a nickel. It's made of copper or brass. Thanks to Earthworks for sizing the photos.

Yep,half of a lock.I have dug a couple whole ones and landowners always seem to like them so I never have actually made it home with one!!Neat though!
