Hey Charles, Good question I would like to find some good hunting sites too. I know some points and pottery have been found near Baden Lake near the Baden Lake hiking trail. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to remove anything from natl. forest govt. land, stick to private land with land owner permission and you'll be alright.

Yoe ARE allowed to pan for gold and surface hunt for arrow points in the Uwharrie national Forrest. I called them and asked the ranger. Also the rules are posted on their website.

Found stone knife

I actually found a stone knife while gold prospecting last year. I feel kinda stupid because I didn't really think about it at the time and I didn't note on my map where I found it. I do know where I've been around there and I was in the Badin Lake area, in between there and Eldorado Outpost. There's no doubt it's a stone knife and I was smart enough to keep it, hopefully I will find some more artifacts and if I do I will mark it on my map and share the info here. I don't think I can post a picture of the knife here although I am using my phone, I'll check on my computer though.

I think you're probably correct. Here is a page of regulations from the website of the National Forest Service. Under the heading "Collecting" it states: "Archaeological sites or artifacts may not be disturbed":

National Forest Camping Rules - National Forest

Here is a page describing what can and can't be collected in National Forests located in North Carolina, where Uwharrie NF is located. Note the very last line reads: "Any disturbance to or removal of historical or archaeological artifacts is prohibited by federal law." Gold panning and rock and mineral collecting in non-commercial quantities is permitted:

Picking up artifacts from a National Park is a big no no. It's a federal offense and they don't mess around.
