I went to a site with my buddy the ole Silver Bandit for a quick hunt. It was a median and he had already found 5 silvers on another hunt. I felt it was a guarantee that I'd find one. Well nothing is guaranteed with this hobby! Right off the bat I found a strangely stamped holed coin like object. My guess was a V for Victory. At right about the same time he found this interesting swastika emblazoned object. We guessed it was most likely pre WWII as the arms go the other way. We still don't know what it is any help would be appreciated. We went on to find many wheaties and eventually he struck silver. He later went on to find a great seal button. Rang up as a penny. I would have liked to have found one of those! I did however find a small religious pendant and a marble. I tried in vain to find a silver but just couldn't pull one out of the layers of trash. When I find a lot of Wheaties and no silver I call it "chasing silver" I will go all day when this is happening because I tell myself it has to be there. Just one more hole... I still think it's there! Anyway it was a nice short hunt with tons of anticipation and let down on my part but I will return!
I was able to find a little info on the "V" penny: They've been posted on here before. It's the upper half of a WWII Victory medal made on a dateless wheatie that has a V painted red white and blue. The bottom half was also a wheatie stamped into the shape of a helmet but remains unfound. The back had a small pin welded onto it to attach to your clothing. I don't know if these were worn by soldiers or civilians or who made them etc. It would be nice to know.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to know that the big war was over. Both my grandfathers served but I never had a chance to discuss it with them. It must have been a great relief. These days they don't end wars they just kind of drag them out and start a few more before the others are finished. Don't forget war is big business it's important to keep the economy going.
