I found these relics in an old Virginia home place. After looking closely I could see VMI with Virtues standing on Tyranny. I found a couple of early Virginia state seal buttons with them. I am wondering if anyone has found any iron buckles that look like these, or can provide additional information on these. I have other items that I will post at a later time. Thanks BiggEhunt

Probably not buckles. Unless we find the iron items in an antique store these days, the items were broken, discarded, sometimes plow struck. Near an old home it is common to find chunks of iron like these. A lot of them were from iron cooking pots of various sizes.

smokey the cat, thanks for looking and replying to my post. that homesite i have found all kinds of stuff out of it and i want you to take a look at some of it , almost everything i have found has vmi on it, i have found early va buttons there but no vmi buttons. i found what looks to be about 30 or so hat badges , there all cut around the edges, but i have never seen them before, and i have been hunting 30 years, i also found what looks to be a mess pot and plate and other items i want your opinions on, I want to say thanks again , Biggehunt

As Smokey already mentioned, these fragments may also have come from a cooking stove.
I wonder if the VMI would actually go to the costly expense of having iron cookware designed and cast with their logo though?

I would be interested in seeing pics of the 'cut hat badges' you found BiggE.

I have never seen iron implements with "VMI" on them. I know an expert on VMI materials. I'll ask about it.

Hat badges would be made of brass. I found some ca 1860 pics of cadets wearing their hats, no insignia on them. I can't make out anything on the pics you posted.

here are more things i dug, the "shield" measures 10 inches by 10 inches and about an eighth of an inch thick, it's hard to see vmi on this stuff you have to kinda stand back and look, but it's there. thanks again for looking and i'll post more soon. biggehunt
