Very Old Padlock

I got out for a little while after work. I hit a nearby site which dates back to about 1900, hoping to find some Mercs or possibly a Barber. No luck with coins, I just dug some Wheaties which are soaking now. But I was surprised by the lock, which looks very old. It appears to be at least pre 1870, but could it be colonial? It seems to be out of place for the site. There are no markings on the lock.

Nice lock. I googled old padlocks and looked through many trying to help you date it and had no luck. All the ones I ahve seen have a key hole cover blocking the key hole. Also is that a number nine on the lock or is that the key hole. If it is the key hole it is the first I have seen.

Very nice! I seen a key once at a flea market that would proably have fit this lock. A barrel key lock that looked like a #9.

It seems to be made of bronze or brass. Not really sure how to tell the difference.
