First of all this is not my find, but I was lucky enough to witness my hunting buddy dig a very rare wreath portion of a two piece North Carolina buckle this past weekend. I've been told that very few (less than five) are known and that no one is sure which tongue goes with this wreath....maybe Pine Tree or State Seal
It looks to be Plate #313 in Mullinax's Confederate Buckle Book with a 10 rarity. Any additional information on this buckle would be greatly appreciated.
The site had previously given up only a few dropped bullets and a couple of buttons over several hunts but we knew troops from both sides had been on the property. We spent spent several hours looking for the tongue without luck but we'll be back as soon as things dry out....a lot of standing water and mud.
Oh by the way, I did find 15 bullets, a 1798 large cent, an 1868 2-cent at a different site that we visited.
