Got this in change recently. I think someone was playing around at the Mint, and QC let it slip through. Anyone seen anything like it?

Sorry the photos aren't very good from my phone.

The front side is obviously a 1980-D nickel that appears to have been stamped a second time with a Lincoln cent sitting on top. Close inspection shows the Lincoln Memorial and all the wording (United States of America and One Cent) stamped into the face of the nickel. The reverse side is blank.

The rim appears to be the normal thickness of a nickel.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for all help.

Looks kinda cool!

Somebody was experimenting, who knows why. Great find

Looks like a mint error. One of the best. Love it. Wish I had one.

nifty nickel

That's an incredible find, anybody would be happy to have it !!:occasion14:

Post Mint man made error coin!

afraid i have to agree. I'm new to metal detecting but not new to coins. nickel planchets (blanks) wont fit into cent die collars.
also, the lincoln memorial looks incused (stamped in) rather than raised (which it would be if stuck with a mint die).

still a very cool find, but most definately a vise or hammer job.

That is correct, the Memorial and print from the cent is stamped in. Any idea why the obverse is blank?
