We stopped at some thrift stores today my wife and I and I saw this mirror sitting on one of the display cabinets. 25 inches tall by 23 inches wide. the nuts on the bottom are made out of wood. It has a little jewelry box built into it. I don't know anything about it but they were asking $125. And I asked the manager and he said I can drop it down to $75. It has a handwritten date of 1897 on the bottom of it. Just something about it I cant walk away from it. My wife said do not buy it so here it is:

That is just gorgeous. I too would have picked that up and faced spousal wrath.

Good thing he was willing to come down on it. Having that modern nut on the back really takes away. ...Can't help but wonder if the numbers are from date of manufacture or if maybe they're for IDing the item or a lot. For the amount of wear-n-tear on the piece, I would have thought the numbers would be more worn. On the other hand, maybe someone else did the research and wrote it in more recently.

Good buy! From the pics, it's obviously not a new piece. Would be nice to know a bit more history on it, but you should easily make a nice profit. Would be nice to re-work the nut and make a proper repair, but really only worth it if you believe the value is much higher.

I was going to look online and see if I can find something or I don't have time try to make something like that right now. The guy down the road does a lot of woodworking I could probably take it to him and see if he has something he could do for it I'm sure he could. Even if it's just get a big bolt screw the wood onto it, it should screw onto the bottom of it I would think. But friends of mine are having an estate sale this weekend so I'm going to take it there and see if I can get any interest in it. I'll be happy to flip it for 250. If it's worth more than that or not but going to try it out. Even if I can double my money I'll be happy with that.

I don't have any idea what things are selling fro nowdays. Hadn't been to a garage sale or an auction in ages! Actually, WE need to have an auction...and probably a garage sale all at the same time!! :laughing7:

5 years ago, I would've said you probably couldn't get more than $150 for it. But furniture items have been steadily going up, it seems. Lately have seen used furniture going for more than new!

I think it might be a shaving mirror....That's my first thought anyhow.....

Cool find!!

Here's a link to something similar.

Antique SHAVING MIRROR Solid Wood WALNUT Victorian ? FoundValue

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/37324549_american-victorian-shaving-mirror

I have no clue and after going back and looking at the links again, there is no real info......

Right on! Thanks! I would say that's exactly what it is. Thank you very much. I'll take it down to the Sale and put it at $280 or. Something. Funny thing, i kinda like it. If only had room for it though... [emoji53]

Yeah, it's a nice mirror. Would fit in perfectly as a prop in a movie or play taking place in the late-1800's to early-1900's. Might "possibly" work in something like Dr. Quinn, but not sure - think it'd be a bit too out-of-place there.

That's a beauty. Looks like the swivel hinge on the mirror was mortised by hand.

That's a nice piece. Size of it would make it much more appealing to others I would think, if you plan on selling it?
