Hmmmm, does it have any holes for attaching to a wall or door? I thought maybe hat hook or coat hook. Is the head of a dragon or a dog? That's brass? I didn't think brass was painted. This item looks painted and might be pot metal, which would explain its brittle character. It's pretty cool looking. Congrats on an interesting find.

Here are some better pictures. The head looks more like a dragon than a dog to me. The black might just be a patina, as you can see in the new pictures it is actually greenish where the brass has oxidized. As far as where it was connected, below the head where the two nubs are looks like where it was connected to something.

My guess - part of a chandelier ? I can picture several of those arranged in a circle , facing inward , with candles in the center .

It might be an old park bench part, like the elbow rest, a piece of wood would attach to the knobby things. Just a thought.
