I soak mine in Worchestershire sauce overnight and see if it helps.

Nic-a-date is well worth the money. It is a ferric acid of some combination. Here is a post that talked about making it- http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/coins/285370-homemade-nic-date-recipe.html
but I've also seen it referred to a ferric chloride, ferric peroxide, and at least one other odd mix. I guess I never read the bottle I had- and it's long gone. I recall getting 50 or more to date from one bottle but a lot more that I tried wee really really bad MD finds tat were way rotten.
