:hello: Want to find some virgin site that has never seen a metal detector? Everybody dreams of Eldorado and its as close as your city hall or county courthouse. I'm a researcher and one of the tricks of finding treasure sites is reading. Read every book in your local library that has to do with your county and keep a note pad nearby and write down any areas mentioned that smells like a detecting site.
Next, go to your Tax Collectors office and ask for the Government Survey Plats that usually date around the 1830's to 1850's that show pioneer homes and settlements (some might be ghost towns today). Ask if they have any old Plat maps available for sale. The photos below are for Madison County, Kentucky dated 1876 and available for $10.00 at their map division. Richmond, Kentucky had a battle site downtown. By comparing the map in the local book to modern maps, I was able to figure out where the battle lines were. Much of the line was situated in the African-American side of town and there were several vacant lots near those lines. I was visiting and didn't have time to get permission or hunt. Anybody can do this if they just take some time when its too cold or hot to hunt.
Research is the key to finding Eldorado.
Two other plats I have is a 1936 plat map of Lake county, FL where I live and a 1949 Orange County, Fl Land Atlas. Imagine what you can find in your courthouse and the best part is the Tax Office people will pinpoint the sites that you find on modern maps and tell you who holds the mortgage so you can get permission.
Now get busy and start your own research project and let me know any progress you make here on Treasurenet. :icon_thumleft:

EXCELLENT advice! Big Thanks! :hello2:

Only SOME counties in the US have Plat maps, unfortunately.
BUT you can find old topo maps, almost as good.
