Great read Jeff... My wife's family is in Garrett County, and I am fascinated by the history of Western MD, and surrounding areas... Wish I lived there, I would tear those mountains up with my Lesche.
Once a year or so we get up there for a visit, need to research some old dirt, and gain permissions..
October cant get here soon enough...

The "good old days". Guess ir was pretty rough traveling then. Today sure is a lot different. Maybe we have Henry Ford to thank for that? How long would it take you to make that trip today by car?

Some things Never Change

Wow, let's see if I can type without mistakes. I can't believe that. Texas roads are fantastic compared to that. Besides the interstate in south Texas where the speed limit is 85, our poorest country roads are kept in great shape and it gets harder every day to find an unpaved road. The only time we see something like that is when road construction is taking place and men are working. A few streets in the poorest areas of San Antonio will have potholes, but they get fixed fairly fast. I'm guessing all that beautiful snow and ice plays havoc up there. I feel your pain. The road on my little piece of heaven(?) is better than that, but my neighbor has a bulldozer and that helps.

allot has gotten worse since they switched to Liquid Salt for the Winters.
What ever it actually is Made of it not only eats the roads,
it eats Cars Undercarriages also. if that doesn't destroy your car. Hit a few of those Holes

I don't want to get political but every year they request a Tax increase for the roads,
And usually get it, But still complain they are not getting enough to get off there Fat lazy Butts !

We can't complain about TxDot, though some people do. Yeah, something is sure eating up the roads. I guess it is just easier to maintain stuff here because it's so dry all the time. I now have something else to be thankful for...

coal ash was less of a problem here , but in all honesty.
limited in bad winter years.
when it comes to most roads in the winter.
things are no where as dangerous as they used to be.
but we pay for it with repair and replacement costs to cars .
