War buttons found in California (NEW PICS & INFO)

My cousin found these misc. buttons at his house here in California. It dates back to the Gold Rush era. Anyone who can identify them please do so. It would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Civil War buttons found in California

The eagle buttons are U.S. Army "Great Seal" general service buttons, 1902-present.

The bottom item in the first photo is the disk from the tongue portion of a two-piece "tongue & wreath" belt plate and likely dates from the mid to late 1800's.

The two large items in the bottom photos are U.S. Army collar disks from World War I. The one with crossed rifles is an Infantry enlisted man's collar disk, 12th Regiment, Company C.

Thank You PBK for the quick response and great info!

Re: Civil War buttons found in California

Glad I could help. ;)

Don't know what happened to another post in this thread, but someone mentioned the resemblance of the belt plate tongue disk to the one used on the c. 1850's California "state seal" plates. Here's a photo of a replica of one of those for comparison:

Nice!

Re: War buttons found in California

Everytime I see buttons from uniforms, and such, I feel bad I wasn't into MDing while I was in the service... Went to many installations and saw many fields where many a man trained for combat... I am sure they are holders of many memories...

Re: War buttons found in California

PBK is correct on the buckle. It dates from the 1850's, and is very rare. I have heard it referred as " Miner Buckle" or " Star of David " buckle. In any case, I know some collectors who would like to have it.
If I can figure this picture thing out ok, I will post a picture of a complete one. Nice finds !

Re: War buttons found in California

I also found more info on the piece in the first picture far right.
William Taussig & Co. was listed in 1850 as a New York purse manufacturer. By 1852 Taussig had begun producing a wide range of leather goods for both the military and the California gold rush trade: belts, gloves, holsters, money belts, gold bags, etc. In order to capitalize on the new Western market, the firm opened a branch in San Francisco. A new partnership resulted in Taussig, Pollack & Co. in 1855, and the following year they became Pollack Bros., "importers of fancy goods and watches." Produced for civilian wear in the goldfields, the buckle would reportedly be worth $600+ if complete; the tongue alone, perhaps $300.

Re: War buttons found in California (NEW PICS & INFO)

Thanks for the welcome Jim, and Kgbyll, to answer your questions, I really don't know much about that buckle, I took that picture a couple of years ago when I went detecting with a couple of friends and we dug several buckles and that was one of them. The guy that dug it allready had one like it but he was excited to find both halves. He has a rather large collection of buckles and knows alot more about them than I do. I beleive he has a book with some info on it. If you would like to pursue it further, e-mail me, and I will see what I can do.
HH Mike
