One of the items I found at my alma mater this weekend was this flattened oblong disk; it's shaped like a penny that's been run over by a train. It appears to have the edge of a coin, but there is no detail that I can see inside. It almost has a silver sound when dropped. I've placed it beside a 42 P war nickel that I found this morning with a little time to kill. The other item is about 3/4 x 3/4 inches square, almost 1/4 inch high and heavy. There is a hole in the back that doesn't go the whole way through.

Not a coin - it's too evenly flattened and the rim still holds the pattern.

I'm thinking it was an inset... like for a brooch or horse furniture or what have you.

Is that last item a cuff link?

I hate when I find coinlike disks with no writing or markings on them. The War Nickel is cool.

Halfdime,

I found something similar to the lettered block you found:

CS-brass1.webp

CS-brass2.webp

Mine certainly looks like it was meant to function something like a wax seal (note the SC is inverted). That does not seem to be the case with yours, however, since I could not make out letters from the inverse of yours. I have no hole in the back of mine. The edges appear to have been machined to produce a size very similar to those you mention. I think it is made of brass or bronze (it is heavy, like yours). Found in the Mid Hudson Valley, NY

Maybe someone knows what these were used for.

Later!

It's flattened anyway, so put it in the cooker (electrolysis).

Mine was found in the lower Hudson Valley, depending on your definition. Let's just say you can see the Tappan Zee.
