Washington to star in remake of "Scarface", Lincoln gets smashed
Proving the notion that I was, as Nick Papageorgio has claimed, dropped on my head shortly after birth, this morning I decided to try another area of the creekside farm I've been searching. I spent too much time getting few signals and even fewer coins before wising up and migrating in the direction of a known silver mine. My first good signal was this flattened wheat penny; across the creek is a rail line that is still in use, so it's easy to surmise where this travesty occurred. I found two other wheats, including a 39, and all the stomachs around started to rumble. At one point, I made the following announcement: "We'll leave at 11:30 or after finding silver, whichever comes first." I thought that would give me about ten or fifteen minutes. My daughter pulled out the official watch of Halfdime Detecting Corporation and we discovered that it was 11:27
. This put the pressure on, but when you make a pledge like that you have to follow through. After that grand pronouncement, I got an 83/84 signal, often a Merc but just as often a memorial penny; it was the latter. I was resigned to a day without silver when I got a deep 93 signal, which here has been a Merc. I got to 4.5", which was the depth my XLT had given me, and found nothing. I made incisions around the circumference of the hole (which was approximately the size of Nick's head) and pried toward the middle. This did the trick, and I could see the shine of a quarter at the bottom of the hole, still imbedded in the soil. I gently pulled it out and admired this 1940 Washington; I'm sure both kids have one, but I'll guess this is better than at least one and probably both. At no time did I touch George with my shovel; the scar on his cheek is not a gouge, but surface discoloration. I think it gives him character. After filling the hole back in, my lovely and loyal daughter showed me that watch; it was 11:33. She laughed with an odd satisfaction, saying that she had tricked me. Hey, if every little deceit I encounter yields a silver quarter, I'll be okay with that.
