For the last 2 weeks I had been wondering if this area could be a trash pit. Well it was. As soon as I got about 4 inches down I started seeing black broken glass......LOTS of broken glass. Then the bases and spouts of beautiful colonial whiskey bottles started appearing. Finding most broken was heartbreaking. The largest base had a pontil going in about 3 inches and the glass was super thick with different colors in the black (blue, gold, green). It was super hot so I only dug down about a foot. This is what came out of it. The iron objects included 2 horseshoes and a complete curry comb and numerous spikes and nails. Pewter objects included a silver plated object which looks to have an eagles coming out of the base. I can see the eagle eyes, beak, and feathers which flow downward throughout the entire relic. It is flat at the eagles head and can stand. I am pretty sure this object wrapped around wood. I have been told so far it could have come off a cane, a sword, or a pistol. I really have no clue but in its day it must have been a beautiful piece. Only about a third of the silver plating remains and the pewter below has turned brown. Some of the pewter is also flaking on the eagles head. The brass objects include 2 cuff buttons with ringlets with black stones and a fancy orange design on top which could be a script C or S. Also found was what I think is a fancy silver plated top to a perfume bottle. Several small caliber musket balls appeared as well as a bale seal with an angel or greek mythological woman. This is the same pit I found my Louisiana cuff so I am hoping a few more buttons might be further down. On the hillside below this pit I have found several porcelain underwear buttons as well as the brass 4 holed variety and 2 1859 Indian Head pennies. The pit will have to wait until this oppressive heat goes away as I was super dehydrated after only digging an hour and a half. It takes almost an hour to walk to this site as well. I will certainly be glad when Fall gets here! HH Devonrex
