Just got in and will post an update once I clean everything up. Went to a site today that I had found eight years ago. I had found 3 Georgia buttons at this site and thought I had pretty much hunted every inch of it. Well, after all this time, a lot of the thick undergrowth that was there before was gone and after a steady rain yesterday the ground was just right to get maximum depth. As you can see from the pictures I missed alot! I could not believe how deep I was detecting musket balls, some of them at 15 inches!!! Like most early Confederate camps most all the bullets are round balls. I pulled out 17 today and 1 teardrop pistol bullet. And the buckshot, I havn't even counted them yet, but I found one area where they were so concentrated I got tired of digging them up. I left many signals behind for another day. What I'm most excited about was right in the middle of all this lead I dug up 2 buttons - 1 coat and 1 cuff.
The coat has a tiny shank on it that just yells out Confederate all the way and the cuff apears to be a tin back. I had found a gorgeous coat GA1 here before with 95% gilt and 2 other coat Georgias with the date 1861 on the back. This coat is shaped differently though and appears to be low convex so I don't know what I've got!!! I took a picture of all my finds, and 1 closeup of the buttons, and a picture of all the shotgun shells I dug (quite alot - but as you know each one could be a button). It was a beautiful day to be out. HH Devonrex
