what a great day! my first silver and something i never imagined i'd find!!!
i had the most fun day yesterday! we were in WV for a deer hunting trip (the guys) and i got to go along for a treasure hunting trip
! the weather was perfect; it had rained all night on ground already saturated by melting snow, but the sun was out and the temperature in the 60's. so where would i head but to the site where i found the eagle head saddle pommel in november!? i decided to start out working the area around where the eagle was found. i started off finding a few shot gun shells, but it seemed in every hole or plug there were crock pieces, glass, and the top section of a beautiful amethyst bottle. (i tried to post a picture, but had to eliminate it to make way for the others). oh, yeah, my family bought me a digital camera of my own for Christmas that is easier to use than my daughter's. i went a little overboard with the pictures, but had a lot of fun! in one of the plugs i dug for a shotgun shell i found an item that may have been part of a knife or a utensil of some sort. it didn't register on the detector, of course. i'm not sure what the material is, but i posted a picture of it. my next fun find was a complete harmonica reed and in the same plug out fell a clay marble!! honestly, i was thrilled with my finds up to this point and would have called it a successful day already. i came across then some various scraps of metal and a rifle casing, and then got a signal of something rather large, it even gave "overload" on the DFX. but considering the size of the eagle head i had found previously, i was hopeful rather than skeptical. well, after i dug the plug, i saw in the hole just a long straight edge. working carefully around it, i pulled it up and thought, "now, that looks really familiar. i ought to know what that is..." but for the life of me i could not recall what the image was. i knew it was something good, but wouldn't know how good until today. oh, it was only three inches deep, whereas the eagle head was about eight inches. i think this is because the object was in the middle of a crude road of sorts, where the soil had been pushed and levelled to either side, the eagle found about 10 yards away above the small bank, hence the depth difference
? next came the famous canning jar lid, which i didn't even mind! then the 2nd clockworks found on the site, the last one the same night as the eagle. i finished the roadbed then went onto the other side of it and found the buckle- saddle related? about now i was really hungry, having been hunting for 5 hours without food. so i changed tactics after going to the car for two kitkats and tried to imagine a walk from the house foundation to where the mailbox would have been. my first signal was an old fuse or something, but my second signal on this "mailbox walk" was what i thought was going to be a penny for sure (memorial) since i'd found 5 here previously. i dug the plug and checked the hole- not there, so checked the plug, then hit it with the bullseye. when i lifted it out i almost fell over (remember this was my first ever silver). i just stared at it for several seconds befor even wiping off the little dirt to reveal the words "one dime" then turning it over for the date "1902." i was sort of in shock. it was so pretty! i can't believe how shiny it was right when it came out! about this time my cousin same to check on me. his dad is the property owner.. i ran up to show him the dime and the other item, which he wasn't sure about either. he asked me to go to the old cemetary with him to look at the ombstones and see if there was anyting on the outskirts. i'm going to try to show a pic of the most readable tombstone if i have room. about a foot beyond the lilac tree at the edge of the little graveyard we found what i think is a musketball. well, i called it quits after a huge chain link and another rifle casing, as it was dark by now, and i had to pick up the deer hunters. i showed my treasures to them when we got back and my husband and 18 yr old thought maybe the unidentified object was a bayonne, and i said "yeah, i knew it was something i should recognize!" then they said they werent sure, so i didn't want to get my hopes up. but i took it to church with me this morning
and showed it to my brother and a friend who know more about such relics and they both think that it is definitely a bayonnet. like i said i never, ever imagined i would find something like this. unbelievable!! thanks so much for looking and reading this very long post!
