I found this at an old area that had some civil war fighting on it but don’t know if this is from that era. Please let me know your thoughts.

Describe the material, is it metal or leather. Details from personal observations are helpful.
 

If it's corroded iron/steel, looks like a civil war ration can. Keep it, they are getting hard to find and pricey.
 

It is steel at first I thought it was a canteen but didn’t want to say that and people just agree with me. Plus the canteens were very round not like this. It is also filled with dirt.
I really have no idea what it could be.

I’m leaning toward a lantern pot.They were also used to light fires when the wood was wet.
 

It doesn’t look like it would be round to me but that’s the closes that it could be.
