Hello! My husband dug this 'rock' out of our backyard several years ago, and I'm wondering if anyone might have any inkling of what it might be. I put it on this forum because it seems to have fossil properties, such as the spine-like formation on one side. The rock measures approximately 12"-14" across, both ways.

Surely you jest? lol

I'm going to guess it is Cement.
not a Fossil. But I'm just going by only seeing pictures.
May even be part of a cinder Block

I live in southeastern Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. When we found the rock, I checked to see if we're in a native American effigy mound belt, which we are, btw.

The rock looks more like granite also, definitely not cement.

Have you tried putting a magnet on it. Just wondering if the lines are maybe iron. Just a thought.

Granite is igneous, so no fossil possible. This is just a wild (yep, very wild) guess.........could those appendages be the larger or combined segments of an ancient sea anemone......................

Very interesting, but I have no guesses at this time.

Could you post a pic of the back side please?

Oh, welcome to Tnet. :tongue3:

The host rock is granite. The ridges I see are a later intrusion of magma into the rock. Pegmatite, small ones. Caused by later igneous activity...Just my opinion.

:hello: Welcome to TNET!

I believe your item is weathered granite with several seams of quartz. The granite will erode quicker than the quartz leaving the odd shape that your rock has. It is not a fossil.

I believe I did (we've had it well over five years), and I'm pretty sure it didn't attract. I'll have to try again to be sure.
