SMS means "Special Mint Set." These were sets of special coins that were first struck in limited quantities in 1965 and officially released in 1966-1967. They were intended to replace proof sets, which had been discontinued by the U.S.; however, the coins were not equal to true proofs in quality.
Tim, In the years 1965-7, the Mint didn't release Proof Sets, so they put out SMS, Special Mint Sets! These Sets are all Proof-Like Uncirculated Coins! They go for about $13-15 a set!
Thank you-
that makes perfect sense.
How do you tell the difference?
Are there markings or do they appear to be like a proof with the mirror background and frosty Kennedy?
