The material it is made of could be alabaster?

I think its a Japanese Netsuke. You can test if its plastic by heating up a pin very hot and then carefully touching it to the piece (**somewhere inconspicuous, you don't want to damage it**). If its plastic the pin will melt it.

Hot pin didn't put even a little mark pushed hard to

Jadeite?? Does it pull apart?? It looks like it separates near the center line....

Bakelite will not melt with the pin test.

Test it with 409 no color change on swab

The best test is to run the piece under hot tap water.
If it smells a little like your old high school chemistry lab (formaldehyde), it's Bakelite.
If it smells like vicks vapo-rub (camphor), it's Celluloid.
If it smells like burnt milk, it's Galalith (1920's).
If it smells clean, or like nothing at all, it's lucite, acrylic, or Lord knows what.

It looks like an Ivory nut carving. Vegetable ivories can really fool you but there are several differences between natural ivory and nut ivory.
