Good possibility. The plates usually had a more squared recess, sometimes a bar across that open spot to secure the lift handle, but that could have rusted away. I know someone on here will know for sure.

Could be the center piece of a wood stove top liftable lid. I've seen them that small with rings around it to fill the larger hole. But I see what appear to be 4 legs on one side and that suggests to me that it might be a stand for a sad iron to rest on.

I think it is too small for a stove eye. I'm with Almy on trivet for an iron.
