What is it petrified wood?

Last picure looks like oak. No expert but it looks like an oak root to me. Cool find!

Carbonized Wood is the description given by a geology professor concerning samples found deep in the ground.

Ancient or old forest fires ... dead trees later topple and are engulfed in the ongoing mud slides that occur during the rains.
Lie deep underground but still a long way from becoming petrified.
Old, but not old enough.

Differentiation became ... is it stone ... or is it more "wood like", kind of flaky ?
