I know the glass is broken maybe a milk how old??????????

It almost looks like a mark of some sort on the black piece,,, a little toothbrush action on it may reveal something... ?

The black piece looks like a faceplate for an electrical switch.

it's the bottom part of an old light bulb receptacle, the center hole is where the hot and neutral would pass through to power it up. There may have been a separate thumb or turn switch in the missing section, or it could have been a direct feed with switching on the wall. Cheers and cool find. It's probably bakelite, perhaps 20's-30's.

If it's bakelite, it's the wheel off an extension cord switch. They were two piece And you could put it anywhere convenient on the cord.

Take a closer look, I think that's dirt not rust. Also please note my above reply "If it's bakelite, it's the wheel off an extension cord switch". Also, if you find a piece of bakelite that has been buried or even left outside the fibers really start to show. Have restored several old telephones that looked as bad as that. Now all you need to do is wait for the OP to tell you if it's metallic or not.

That is a good possibility! I was also thinking it could be a cover to a door bell from the 1930's to 1950's.

Looks like the remains of an old 2 prong lamp cord plug missing the prongs and set screws.
