I think the US $1 dollar gold coin is probably the smallest coin I've ever seen, that
was in circulation in the US ... about half the size of my baby fingernail.
smaller than the 3 cent piece...

The smallest U.S. coins by weight are the U.S. silver three-cent pieces, Varieties 2 & 3, minted from 1854 to 1873, at 0.75 gram.

The smallest in diameter are the Liberty Head gold dollars, c. 1849-54, at 13mm-- unless, of course, you include the fractional California gold coins, which are even smaller.

Here's my smallest coin Pete.

I dug it and the Merc at the same location back in 1983.

I was using the Fisher 1260-X and with it I found more silver dimes than I had up to that time or since.

The Fisher 1260-X totally rocked the coin shooter metal detector industry in 1982 when it was introduced. Up to that time most companies still were making "lunch box" detectors.

I'd take this preset GB machine to our local park and dig 5 times the silver of fellows using the best manual ground balance machines of the 80's. It wasn't long before Fisher 1260-X machines were all over the state.

I don't think it out-of-line to say that this single model was in a major way responsible for removing much of the silver from our old parks back in the early 80's.

Soon Garrett, Whites, etc., copied them.

I don't have a 1/2 Dime, but in March 1981, I did find a 1855 $1 Gold Coin.
Shown here with a Barber dime and an Indian Head for size reference.

BTW Willie D... the 1/2 Dime is 16.5 mm diameter and the Barber Dime is 17.9 diameter. The older Gold $1 as PBK mentioned is 13.0 mm. This one is 15.0 mm.

Yes, it's a shame too because it's the best IH shape wise I have found, except for the hole and stamped slot of course. It's an 1860 also, pretty old.

On that day, I actually found three holed coins. Weird. This one, another IH with a bullet hole shot through it, and a old 190_ foriegn coin(? can't remember the type off the top of my head) with a very small hole at top.

I go with the Mexican gold peso coins. The ones I have seen are about the size of the pencil eraser in diameter.
