the location it was found was near the
San Jacinto battleground area in south Texas

Welcome to the forum I'm not sure of the ID. Is there any kind of fuse opening? Hopefully someone will have more info

Thank you,
no sign of a fuse opening, it's round but flatter than a cannon ball, and as you can see has divided compartments inside, maybe divided into 4 parts.

Is it iron or rock?

Kind of looks like a natural iron nodule. Cast cannon balls don't flatten - they shatter.

my metal detector picked this up, it's iron, not a rock, and is divided into 4 sections inside.
When i found this it wasn't merged into the bedrock like your picture above. Although it was buried it was loose, not connected to surrounding rock formations.

It's basically like a geode only made of iron.... it probably formed in a soft rock like sandstone which has eroded away.
