I was searching out of curiosity for coin defects like double strikes or date, mint over strikes. I noticed on a nickel that it had what looked like metal spatter attached to some of the letters. I could not find a picture or description of what this is. Just curious if this type defect has a name and could this type of defect make a coin have a higher value?

Thanks,
Jeff

"Cud"

Happens when part of the die breaks off. It looks like a blob of metal on the coin when in fact it is part of the blank that did not get struck due to the broken die.

Thanks for the reply and the ID of the type defect. Any value to a "cud" defect or is it just something that occurs often, seems like it would.

Jeff

**added after post** Did some looking around with the term "cud" and it looks like anything else, it just depends on the severity of the defect and the coin it is on as to the value. Thanks again.

This site shows general values for various U.S. error coins including cuds, check it out.

Obviously value will depend on severity of the error and condition/rarity of the coin will also factor. From your photos, price wise, I feel your coins would fall into the low end due to the relatively small error. Still a neat find. :icon_thumright:

Thanks, you must have been typing your reply at the same time I was editing mine. Your post was there after the few seconds it took me to edit my reply. Thanks for your time and I will check out the link you gave me.

They aren't cuds. You are correct, they are die chips. They don't really add much value, sorry.
