Found this at an estate sale. Looks to be hammered copper or bronze. The writing is the only marking on the piece. The bottom is rounded so I'm assuming it sat on a base or pedestal. Does anyone know Japanese my guess....or Chinese? And could translate this, and its intended use? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, In between your reply I determined the what it is. Now I'm wondering how old it is,and what the writing says, which may answer the first question.

The characters seem to be as follows: 金剛 (Kongō) and 特製 (Tokusei). I say seems to be because the artist did the strokes in the character 金 a bit differently. Plus the character for 製 looks different as well. 金剛 (Kongō) is often related to Vajra, a Buddhist symbol of indestructibility and power. 特製 (Tokusei) just means specially made or specially manufactured.
