here's what I found....
"This is the location of an abandoned particle accelerator which was proposed in the 1940's (?) by the Air Force. It seems to have never been built, but people that have been to this site indicate there are concrete pads, an underground area (now filled with water) and other interesting relics."

There are rumors it WAS built and functional, then it was abandoned and filled with water to stop anyone from finding out what went on there...Whole facility was underground...I would think they were doing nuclear testing during the war...Trying to come up with new elements to use in bombs...Just my guess...If you look in the Adirondacks, there are at least 25 abandoned nuke silos...
