What is this lion?

Found today am hoping somebody knows what this copper/brass lion is- whether something worn or something else?

My first thought also.

No way is it a buckle. It is either an element of a bracelet or a belt but not the buckle part. It is fairly small 2&1/2 pennies in diameter, and it was attached to the next element with four jump rings. I don't think it is very old, it is rather cheaply stamped out.

Yeah looks like what we call pot-metal, used for inexpensive items was like the plastic of not long ago. Still could be 50 to 70 years old.

Appreciate all of your replies so far. Personally I was thinking Victorian Age from where it was found and something worn. However I do not know for sure so all of your ideas are quite possible. Hopefully someone will be able to positively id it yet. Thanks again.

sash buckle is another possible or one of many in a linked type belt for around the waist thinking late 1800 --Victorian era --british lion design motif

Don't know if there is any connection but a statue of a lion used to sit in the center of town. I found this possible lion sash buckle about 3 houses down from there. The statue was moved years ago and now sits in our park down at our old beach.

I think that's a mourning the war dead "lion" -- the brave as a loin men that died in war --Belgium and England both have such things --if the area where you live has / had a large European population base during the late 1800's thru say WW! era -=-they could maybe be cultural linked...

might be a Belgium or British "mourning" the war dead type of loin statue -(the war dead are thought to been brave as young loins) -the area where you live have a lot of British or Belgium population ? say late 1800 thru say WW 1 era ?

hum your loin statue looks a great deal like the lion statue from 1894 known as "the lion of Atlanta"..at its civil war era burial grounds for the confederate soldiers ... many of which were buried sadly as "unknown" about 3,000 or so --the 1894 statue is a close copy to the "lion of lucuren" --- which is in honor the loyality of the hired siwss bodyguard units loyal unto death to the French king that where killed by the French rioters in the overthrow

The lion statue was donated to the town, by then prominent resident Aaron Early, in 1900. It was also a water fountain.

hum 1900 that's very close to the 1894 time frame of the "loin of Atlanta" of civil war era confederate soldier burial "honor" ---being new jersey was union --maybe it was to honor the union war dead from the area. fom thecvil war and / or --then on going Spanish American war (1899 to 1902)

There are 3 cemeteries in town, Baptist, Methodist, and an Odd Fellows. The Baptist dates back to the 1700s, the Methodist the early 1800s, and the Odd Fellows is relatively newer. All 3 have Civil War veterans buried within. Do not know if there is any connection? All that I do know is that Aaron Early wanted to make a gift to the town with the stipulation that it be placed outside the then Tavern. Appreciate your comments ivan salis.

well many a man often "toasts" ' his war lost buddies in the local tavern while drinking .. often the toast -- here is to the ones not with us --maybe be heard by war vets -- some often drink heavy to try and forget the horrors of war --- like the lost friends and things they had to do to fellow human beings so that they could come home alive --things that often only those that's been to war would or could really understand fully ...
