Definetly looks like solder joints on the contacts. Could be the top of a battery although it looks pretty old for that. It has something to do with current of that I am pretty sure.

I'd go with the battery top/coil

Could indeed be a sealed battery, but I'm betting on an oil-filled capactior, AKA condenser. Show it to the oldest electrician or radioman you can find to be sure.
