Handed down 3 generations refinished in the 70's. I was told it was storage for old time cylinder records, but I don't believe this to be true.
I can't find anything like it..please any info will help.IMG_6667.webp

You don't know what that is? I can' believe it.

While it does have a similar shape to the circa 1900 Edison phonograph cases, I'm thinking it was a knitting/sewing box.
Just big enough to hold yarn, needles, and whatever knitting project grandma happened to be working on...

You say 3 generations? 1920 - 30's? By then cylinder phonographs had gone the way of 8-tracks and cassette tapes... obsolete technology.

Knitting / Crochet box makes perfect sense. Lower part would hold a variety of yarn bundles with needles, hooks and accessories stored in the upper tray. When I was a kid I asked my mother if I could try my hand at crochet. She taught me a few things and I made myself a stocking cap just like an old fur trapper would have. Knitting is harder to do, but I found crochet very stimulating. Maybe I should take it up again?

Well that's a nice thought. Year 62 is right around the corner. I have noticed more of the golden age gals are smiling at me when I'm pushing a cart at the grocery store by myself lately. So that could be a sign I'm still holding up or maybe I'm just goofy looking :tongue3:

To my eye the box looks to be home-made and very nicely done. The bar could be to add some support to upper part of the box so it can be carried using the outside handles without risking damage to the sides. It's a cool family piece. I'd display it in my house. I have a tool chest made by my grandfather in the 1920's. It has a prominent place in my garage.

Yeah, I've seen those smiles as well. I figure they are thinking, "That old guy thinks he's so clever using a grocery cart in place of his walker..."

BTW I'm right behind you in years, but as Indiana Jones said, "It's not the years honey, it's the mileage."

Welcome to the Forum!

You said it was from 3 generations. What is the age of the oldest person who owned it? This will let us know what era of time it was first purchased or constructed.

This was handed down to my mother and she is 85. Her grandmother gave it to her.
