Like Fletch 88. I am not an expert on the Sovereign GT, hopefully OBN will chime in as he repairs/modifys Excaliburs as well as Sovereigns. The Excalibur is based on an earlier less powerful Sovereign design, whose functions were further minimized/ optimized, and repackaged to fit in ruggardized Pods for
detecting metal underwater by divers (pressure tested to 200 ft depth).
The Sovereign GT is a more flexible architecture providing the capability to easily change head phones and search coils.
It is also more powerful having additional capabilities which Fletch mentioned which make it more powerful and come in handy when hunting on dry sand or hunting in parks/on land.
In addition, when it was in production, you could purchase an In Line Probe to it, which is very handy when trying to retrieve a target in a hole/between rocks, especially in trash yareas as you hear the same tone with this pinpointer (1" head) as you do on the Sovereign.
Further, when it was in production, you could purchase a VDI meter which allowed you to more accurately identify targets
(ideal for coin shooting) in addition to the tones.
The Sovereign GT is truly a great knobs and switches machine, which will really be missed missed by those who use it, once it becomes non repairable (not able to get parts).
Sadly, since the Sovereign GT is not water proof, it will be destroyed if dropped in the Salt Water, and over time
salt spray will cause damage to the knobs and switches unless protected. As I live in a tropical area, where it rains (like a cow relieving itself of a flat rock) in the morning and evening - I have to take special care to protect this wonderful machine.
I will keep my sovereign GT till the end, even if it means adding two pounds of additional weight (water proof box) as theese detectors have different capabilities. Further, the only way you will pry the Excalibur out of my hands is death or non supportability (which again is death).
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I really don't know and am very curious. I have a Sov. GT, which is unfortunately out of production of course. My question is, other than the Excalibur being a waterproof/underwater capable machine, what really are the differences between the GT and the Excal.? Other than the obvious...are they basically the same detector. Is the Excal. a good land machine like the GT? I Know very little at all about the Excal. Thank you for any answers in advanced. TR.
