There is the tale of a legendary Peace dollar struck at the Denver Mint in silver and dated 1964.
Rumors of this coin have been around for years. Was it really struck? Did any examples survive?

I would highly doubt ALL were destroyed. It sounds like it was easy for a handful of people to take home some if they wanted. Since everyone had to sign a statement, it seems the mint knew how easy it would be to take a few.

The only problem with ownership is that it could never be openly acknowledged or publicly sold. The US Mint would claim ownership and theft.

Keep in mind that 1965 was the year that they collected all the silver coins and melted most of them down.
