What the heck kind of buckle is this??

Found this today in a field that previously yielded pieces from the 1700s to the present. I think the area it was found used to have a barn, so maybe it's some kind of animal buckle? Any ideas? Age?

might be a saddle belly strap buckle from the size and shape of it

with the find location being a old barn site --it makes perfect sense since a barn is where horse and horse tack (riding equiptment) would be kept at .

by the styling -- I think it looks a bit older say mid to late 1800 's (say 1850 / civil war era to 1880 maybe ) as a rough guess.

Too small to be cinch strap ring

Right,unless it was for a pony,most are at least 4"

It looks more like a Annular brooch but if it is, it's very old :P

Looks like half (broken) a horse bit - a loose ring snaffle type.
