Today I found this buckle, 1.6" wide by 1.8" long. I have found more than a half dozen colonial shoe buckles within the past year, but this is one of my smaller examples of a buckle. I'm still learning buckle types. What's your guess for use and time frame? Thanks.

Could it be a knee buckle or a female shoe buckle from the mid1800s?

I'd say third quarter 18th century knee buckle. A little later in time they use that style on hats.

18th C Hat Buckle is a good chance.

I should have pointed out it has a .45" crown which might make it a shoe buckle. I'm reading knee buckles are flatter.
