I had an interesting conversation with a fellow MD'er at a local park this morning. Tell me what you think.

Background - The Wednesday paper has a neighborhood section and today they had a profile of a city park. The article mentioned that this park was the site of an old turn of the century school. This is not an area of the city I usually hunt because of the distance (20 miles) and the price of gas; but of course the article got my antenna elevated and I just had to check it out.

I get to the park and figure I'll wander around the wood chips in the play ground area and see what types of folks might be hanging around, while at the same time looking for any indication of where the school building might have been.

I had made about 3 laps accross the chips when I noticed another car parked in front of mine and it appeared that the occupant was waving for me to come over to his car. I just ignored him and kept on hunting. After about 10 minutes I noticed the guy was still there so I kinda speeded up my hunting and was going to beat feet outta there.

The guy then yells out that he is an MD'er too and that he has a great place for me to hunt. He proceeds to tell me about another park/ball field that he and his wife had just started to hunt. They found $2.08 in clad and a gold cross; and he thought I might like to know about it. We talked a bit more and I told him that I knew about the park he mentioned and that I was at this one because of the old school. He tells me how the park we're at has been hunted out and there's nothing there except junkies.

After that he left and I went back to finish up the chips. Since this was a test run I decided to do some research about the site and see if I can figure out where the building was situated on the property.

Driving to my next target I got to thinking about my encounter. So.........

1. Was he just being nice and telling me about another site?
1a. Why would any MD'er tell a stranger about a good site?.
2. Was I in "his" park and was he trying to direct me somewhere else?
3. It's a hidden treasure trove and he doesn't want anyone else to know about it?

A lot of people like to share information and excitement with people who have the same interests.

Yes, people do that too. What does your gut say? Do you think he was lying? Does it really matter? A lot of finds are made in places that others think are hunted out. Nobody gets it all. If you think it's worthwhile, then go for it. Your finds will speak the truth, just watch out for junkies.

Keep an eye out for him. If he returns with a detector, that'll tell you something.

I have people come up to me all the time to ask about detecting or to tell me of a good place.

I think the key word here is WIFE because if he includes his wife in mding he cant be all bad :D

When I first joined my MD club I sat at a table with two other fellows and before the meeting began they had already directed me to two spots (small town parks) I didn't know about. I told them where my favorite was.

Some folks do share. That's why it's a hobby and not a profession for some of us. ;)

Now, if you'd returned to your car to find the front tires slashed with a Lesche - that might be a sign he wanted you to play elsewhere. :o

I say take him up on his offer and MD "the other place" AFTER you have searched every square inch of the park you were in. (just in case) ;)

Probably just being nice...I talk with strangers all the time...(My wife says im too freindly) Good way to make new contacts, and find out about new places...I share good spots with others...Im not in this to get rich, just to have fun, and be in the great outdoors....

I've decided he was just being nice. He'll have that spot to himself for a while though. With the high cost of gas and the distance for me to that park I won't be back for a while.

also now that summer is here I have a beach to hunt every day and I've located the old high school football and carnival field so I'll spend a lot of time there this summer:)

Probably just being friendly, maybe he would appreciate having a hunting buddy - perhaps his wife doesn't really want to go detecting with him.

Can't wait to see your pix from the carnival site. Should be good stuff there. Good luck.

Parks are often hunted and hunted HARD, especially the old parks. That said, if the park is big enough, they can never be truly hunted out. I guess the itty bitty lot sized parks could be picked clean, but it is hard for anyone to get their coil over every spec of ground. An 8 inch coil swung overlapping swings to cover everywhere would take a LONG time to cover a few acre park.
