Looks like a tube insulator from knob and tube wiring, but they were porcelain.

It is brass. But it looks exactly what relic nut said after I googled it. Odd that it is brass though.

Since brass is a conductor of electricity, it can't be used as an insulator. I agree it looks like one though. It also looks like a bull nose regulator stem with the threads cut off, but with the inside hole not centered, I doubt it's that either. Too crude I would think. Here's a modern one.

Very old compression plumbing fitting. I think some old gas pipes used this type also.
