What's-it from the woods

Hi all:

Found this item a while back mding in my neighbor's woods. It is 2.5 " long and has threads on the inside. I have showed it to a few people but no positive ID yet. Any ideas?

I think it may be a check valve.

Usually check valves or vent valves have something captive on the inside.

Anne,

I think it had glass in the open spots and was used on a fuel oil barrel to see the oil lever? Maybe? If so it would havbe had a guage of sorts in it too.

Thats a great guess Mike! I can't really tell by the pics, but it almost looks like there might have been screen of some type on the inside and maybe a filter of some sort?...just a guess
