What's the deal with star notes, found one today

I'm not a note guy but I've seen posts regarding star notes. Found one today, a 5 dollar star note. It's my lucky day because I also found the coin books (previous post). Is this note worth much more than five bucks?

What do you mean by star note. How do you tell them apart....Matt

There is a smallish star at the end of each serial number. Kinda hard to notice at first, but they will stick out like a sore thumb once you see 'em.

Star notes are used by the BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing) to replace notes that are damaged during the printing process.

plehbah, I thought you were gonna rake my arse over the coals concerning the Yeoman faux pas. Please check that one out, its bad. Anyway, look closer, its a 4-star note, kinda like a four leaf clover. Sorry you didn't see that at first.

I have been trying to collect a $1, $5, $10, AND $20 star note and so far I have a $1, $5, and 3 $10 star notes and trying for the $20, LOL

I think the only time they are worth anything is if the star note is uncirculated or close to it and it is a very low serial number, oh and a high denomination bill too.

I don't really know why I started saving every star note that I could find.I have a couple hundred
dollars worth in $1,$5,$10 and $20.I give my mom all of the $50 and $100 because it is really hard
for me to put that kind of cash back for no reason.I have no clue what they are worth now,but
maybe my son will get a few bucks someday.I always put them in a heavy book to keep them
pretty flat and free of wrinkles.

I think it was in the Banknotereporter that I saw where the mint (BEP) lists the number of star notes from each series. I'll have to do some reserchin to rediscover where I red that. A new 20 isn't worth that much unless it is a low serial no. , the Fed branch has some bearing too.
