Wheat cent Cache!! Roll of wheaties found dug on an old Farm "UPDATED PIC"

OK, perhaps this doesn't classify as a "cache" because it was not hidden, but most likely lost. I've been hitting an old farm for the past year and have found 2 early coppers, 5 or 6 silvers and some nice relics. The home was built in 1878 and the 88 year old owner has lived there his whole life.

I was checking near the barn today and got a strong signal in the penny range, but when I pinpointed I could tell it was much larger. I decided to dig it because I've found some interesting relics here and cut a 6 inch or so plug. When I pulled the plug I could see 6-8 green penny size coins, all on edge, and I remember thinking, "please let them be Indians". No such luck! But they were all Wheaties!!! I recovered most of them without any further digging, and I got my camera for the Pics. I haven't got them cleaned up yet, but there are 49 of them, and as far as I can tell they are from 1916 to 1957. Earliest dates are a 1916-d, 1919, 1926-d, with the rest being in the 30's, 40's and 50's. (Actually 3 of them are Canadian cents, common in this area, dated in the 40's).

Best I can figure is that someone in the 1950's lost a full roll of cents and the paper wrapper deteriorated in the ground. Enjoy the pics.......

UPDATED PICTURE: AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PICS. Here they are in a case, I lightly used a soft toothbrush and dish detergent, as I wanted to retain the patina.

Note what I think are 3 steel wheaties in the center (corroded) from 1943.

I've checked the dates (1916-1958) with the earliest being the 16-d, 19, 26-d. There were 3 extremely corroded cents in the roll, and I couldn't quite figure out what caused them to corrode so badly. They are literally unrecognizable as Lincoln cents. It took a while, but as many of us old timers remember that in the 50's & 60's each roll of penny's contained 2 or 3 of the steel war cents dated 1943. I believe that is what these are.

Where I live the ground is so acidic (I think) that most wheats I find are nearly corroded to the point that it is hard to rell what they are.

Nice job! I bet you were excited. When I turned up a plug full of a bunch of greenies, I thought to myself, "these better not be memorials"lol. Well done on the find. Do you own any good steel cents?
shoot me a personal message if not and i'll send you a nice shiny one to put in that display so people can see what it was before the rusting. 8)

Good job! That is a great find. I had a friend years ago who hunted a church yard with a bunch of guys and they all knew where "the piece of pipe" was in the yard. One day he decided to dig it up so it wouldn't bother them and he could look under and around it for other signals. He found a roll of quarters that had been dropped and spread out in a long straight line. His went back to the fifties and most were silver. There were a whole bunch of guys wishing they were the
one who decided to dig the pipe.

HH, Don
